The questions that decide the basket

Shoppers ask AI which product to buy before they reach the shelf.

  • Sensitivity: “best baby wipes for sensitive skin”. The answer names a few brands, and the shopper picks one of them.
  • Ingredients: “best protein bar without artificial sweeteners”. Products described by what they contain, and leave out, are the ones an assistant can recommend.
  • Results: “best natural deodorant that actually works”. Assistants repeat what reviews and editorial tests say about each product.
  • Use: “best plant-based milk for coffee”. Clear claims about how the product performs in a specific use give the assistant something to quote.

Most CPG sites are built for awareness, not answers. An assistant recommends products from health sites, magazine tests, retailer pages and reviews. Without clear, consistent claims, it names another brand.

The basics

What is GEO for CPG brands?

GEO means making your brand clear enough for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to recommend. Shoppers ask by need, ingredient and use, not by brand name.

Assistants answer from editorial and health sources. In our ten-question test, Healthline was cited in 7 of 30 answers. The three assistants named 110 products and agreed on only 5.

CPG brands have two jobs. Product pages must say who each product serves and what it does. Brands must appear consistently in guides, reviews and retailer listings assistants read.

GEO and SEO

GEO vs SEO for CPG brands.

Both share the same foundations, crawlable pages and authority, but they answer to different readers. This is where they differ for a consumer goods brand.

Consumer goods categories

Where GEO matters most, by category.

  • Personal care and beauty

Shoppers ask by skin type, hair or concern. Assistants repeat clear ingredient and suitability facts echoed in reviews and editorials.

  • Household and cleaning

Shoppers want safe products for sensitive skin, pets or children. Stating contents and exclusions gives assistants a reason to recommend.

  • Food and drink

Questions cover diet and use, like low sugar or plant-based for coffee. Plain nutrition and usage facts make matching easy.

  • Pet food and care

Owners ask for the best food for a breed, age or condition. Assistants cite clear formulations and life-stage guidance.

  • Baby and family

Parents ask for the gentlest or safest option. Ingredients, certifications and pediatric guidance, stated plainly, are what assistants look for.

  • Health and wellness

Shoppers ask for products for a specific concern. Assistants rely on careful, compliant claims and coverage on trusted health sites.

FAQ

GEO for CPG brands: questions brand teams ask us.

Is GEO the same as AI search optimization or LLM optimization for CPG?

These terms name the same work. GEO, AI search optimization and LLM optimization all aim for one result: your products named when a shopper asks an AI assistant. Methods differ by provider. Ours is the Citation Stack: prompt research, technical fixes, content, review and community research, and visibility tracking.

Do shoppers really ask AI which products to buy?

Increasingly. NielsenIQ's Agentic Commerce Tracker found that 51% of US consumers used at least one AI-powered tool to support their shopping in the past month. It was the first time adoption passed half.

Which sources does AI rely on when it recommends consumer products?

Mostly editorial and health sites, not brand pages. In our test of ten shopper questions, Healthline was cited in 7 of 30 answers. Allure and Good Housekeeping got 6 each, NBC News 5. Target and other retailer pages also appeared. The three assistants named 110 products and brands. 88 were named by only one assistant.

Does ChatGPT favor big brands over smaller ones?

It favors the brands it can describe with confidence. Large brands start with more coverage. But answers are far from a fixed list. In our test, only 5 of 110 products were named by all three assistants. A smaller brand with clear claims, reviews and editorial mentions can be named for the need it serves.

Is optimizing for AI search different from retail media on Amazon or Walmart?

Yes. Retail media buys placement inside a retailer's results. GEO works on how assistants describe and recommend your products across the web, before the shopper reaches a retailer. The two work together: the assistant often points to a retailer page.

What GEO strategies work best for consumer packaged goods brands?

State what each product is for and what it contains, in plain language. Keep that consistent on your site and retailer listings. Earn coverage in the editorial guides and reviews assistants cite. Track which shopper questions name you. All of it must fit the product claims you are allowed to make.

Can we track sales from ChatGPT?

Partly. Visits from assistants to your site show up in analytics, and we track them. Most CPG purchases happen at a retailer, so we also measure how often your products are named for the agreed shopper prompts, which is the signal you can move.

How do you measure the work?

We count citations of your brand and products across agreed shopper prompts in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. We compare against a baseline taken before work begins. We also track visitors AI assistants send to your site.
