Track AI Traffic
AI traffic analytics: what you can and can't see.
Find assistant visits in Google Analytics with session dimensions, which show where new and returning users start each session. Track citations separately, because a citation is not a visit.
Short answer
How do you track AI traffic?
AI traffic analytics means measuring the visits that AI assistants and AI search features send to your site. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside Search Console's overall search traffic. A mention or citation alone does not prove traffic, pipeline or revenue. Connect findings to your own analytics and commercial data.
In brief
Five things to know first.
Analytics sees clicks only
Your analytics records visits. An assistant can name your brand to a buyer without sending anyone to your site.
Check the source dimension
Google Analytics records where each new session comes from, using dimensions with a "Session" prefix. You see these in the Traffic acquisition report.
Few people click
Pew found users clicked a link inside a Google AI summary in just 1% of visits to pages with one.
Platforms give partial views
Bing's AI Performance report shows citations, but only a sample, and not ranking or placement.
Citations need their own tracking
Run an agreed set of buyer questions on a schedule and record who gets named, against a baseline.
The basics
What your analytics can see.
Google Analytics organizes data as user, then session, then event. Source and medium describe where a session came from, so assistant visits appear there when the click carries a referrer or a tag.
Analytics reports what happened on your site. It cannot report what an assistant said about you before, or instead of, a click.
| Analytics can show | Analytics cannot show | |
|---|---|---|
| Visits | Sessions arriving from an assistant link | Answers where you were named, no click |
| Source | Source and medium of tagged visits | Why an assistant chose its sources |
| Pages | Which landing pages those visits reached | Which pages were read but not clicked |
| Competitors | Nothing about rivals | Who is named instead of you |
ChatGPT traffic
Find ChatGPT traffic in analytics.
ChatGPT search answers include links that users open from a Sources button. Those clicks are the visits you can count. Whether each one arrives tagged depends on how the link is sent.
Open the acquisition report
In Google Analytics, open the Traffic acquisition report. It groups sessions by session source and medium.Search for assistant sources
Check which assistant sources appear in your Google Analytics property. The Traffic acquisition report shows session sources. "First user" dimensions show where new users came from, and that value stays fixed when they return.Look at the UTM source
Check how ChatGPT visits appear in your own property, then group them. Google Analytics counts a person who leaves and returns later as one user. Each separate visit counts as a separate session.Save a comparison
Build one saved segment or channel group, so every month reads the same way.Read landing pages and events
See which pages these sessions reach and whether they trigger your key events.
AI referral traffic
How AI referral traffic is attributed.
Google Analytics attributes sessions to the source it can see. A session with no referrer is treated as direct, and Google's worked example shows a direct entrance inheriting the earlier UTM values for that user.
So untagged assistant visits can land in direct or under another source. Treat any count as a floor, not a total.
Session scope
Session source and medium are re-assigned every time a user returns.
User scope
First user source keeps the value from the first visit, even on later returns.
Last-click for both
User and session dimensions use paid and organic channels last click, whatever model you select.
Direct inherits UTMs
A direct entrance is attributed to the UTM values already recorded for that user.

The blind spot
Why clicks understate AI influence.
Pew Research studied the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. When a Google AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one.
A link inside the summary was clicked in just 1% of visits to pages with one. A buyer can be influenced by an answer and never reach your site.
Platform tools
What Google and Bing report.
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted in Search Console's overall search traffic. It suggests tracking conversions and time on site in tools like Google Analytics.
Bing's AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows total citations, cited pages and grounding queries. Bing says the data is a sample of overall activity.
| Tool | What it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics | Sessions by source and medium | Only visits that arrive |
| Search Console | Search traffic, including AI features | Not reported separately |
| Bing AI Performance | Citations, cited pages, grounding queries | A sample; no placement |
| ChatGPT | No site owner report found | Use analytics and tracking |
How to track
How to track AI traffic: five steps.
Pair what analytics counts with a view of the answers themselves. Together they show both the visits and the visibility behind them.
Set up an AI segment
Check which assistant sources appear in your own Google Analytics property, then group them into one channel. A person who returns later counts as one user, but each visit counts as a separate session.Let assistants reach you
To be eligible for ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP addresses.Agree a prompt set
List the buyer questions that matter, by stage and platform, before you measure anything.Record a baseline
Capture who is named and cited for each prompt now, with the exact prompt and platform.Repeat on a schedule
Re-run the same prompts weekly and compare against the baseline, not against last month's guess.
Want the tracking done for you?
LLMReach tracks mentions, citations and cited URLs across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini against your baseline.
Citation tracking
Track citations, not just visits.
LLMReach tracks mentions, citations, share of voice, cited URLs, sentiment, position and competitor visibility across AI answers. Each citation is captured with the exact prompt and platform.
Metrics are kept separate, not averaged into one score. A brand can be mentioned without its site being cited.
Mentions and citations
A mention names your brand. A citation links to your page. Count each on its own.
Share of voice
Your share of all tracked brand mentions, against the competitors in the same answers.
Cited sources
The pages assistants draw on show where to act next.
AI traffic review
Traffic findings sit beside citation data, so visits and visibility are read together.
Common mistakes
Mistakes that skew AI traffic data.
Most errors come from treating a partial count as the whole picture. Read each number for what it measures.
| Mistake | Better approach | |
|---|---|---|
| One number | Treat referral visits as total AI impact | Read visits next to citation tracking |
| Tag trust | Assume every assistant visit is tagged | Expect some to sit under direct |
| Bing sample | Read grounding queries as complete | Treat them as a sample |
| No baseline | Start measuring after changes | Take a baseline before work starts |
| Revenue claim | Say a mention proves revenue | Connect to your own commercial data |
FAQ
AI traffic: common questions.
How do I find ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?
Check whether ChatGPT shows up in your session sources. OpenAI tells users to open cited sources to verify them, and warns that citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect.
What does utm_source=chatgpt mean?
A UTM tag labels where a session came from. In Google's example, a session started with no referrer is attributed to the UTM values already recorded for that user. Check which tags your visits carry before building reports.
Why does AI referral traffic look so small?
AI referral traffic looks small because few users click through. Pew found a click on a link inside a Google AI summary in 1% of visits to pages with one. An assistant can influence a buyer without sending a session.
Can Google Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?
Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic in Search Console. It does not report them as a separate line in that overview, so pair it with Google Analytics for conversions.
Does Bing show how often my site is cited?
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how your content is cited across Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing. It reports total citations and average cited pages. Counts do not show ranking or placement.
Can I track AI mentions that do not become visits?
Mentions without visits need citation tracking, not analytics. Run an agreed set of buyer prompts across the assistants on a schedule, record who is named and cited, and compare each run against a baseline taken before any work.
Do I need to allow ChatGPT's crawler to get visits?
Visits from ChatGPT search need your pages to be eligible. OpenAI says to allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and to allow its published IP addresses. Opted-out sites are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can appear as navigational links.
