Shopify and ChatGPT

Shopify ChatGPT: how your store sells there.

How the Shopify ChatGPT integration works, what Shopify's help docs require, and what decides whether your products show up when people shop in ChatGPT.

Short answer

How does Shopify work with ChatGPT?

Shopify ChatGPT is a sales channel that lets shoppers discover your products in ChatGPT. It is active by default for eligible stores, and customers finish buying in your own Shopify checkout. Shopify charges no extra fee beyond standard payment processing.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • It is a discovery channel

Shopify describes its ChatGPT channel as a discovery-focused referrer. It helps shoppers find your products.

  • Checkout stays yours

Customers complete the purchase in your online store checkout, so your branding and payment methods apply.

  • It is on by default

The channel is active for eligible stores. You can remove ChatGPT's access through Shopify Catalog.

  • No extra fee

Shopify says selling in ChatGPT carries no fees beyond your standard payment processing fees.

  • Crawling still matters

ChatGPT search can only include your site if OAI-SearchBot is allowed to crawl it.

What it is

What the Shopify ChatGPT channel does

Shopify's help docs say its ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores. LLMReach's free AI audit is the first step: it shows what buyers see before you change anything.

OpenAI announced Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, and said over a million Shopify merchants were coming soon. Shopify's own channel sends buyers to your store checkout.

  • Discovery first

Shoppers find your products inside ChatGPT.

  • On by default

Eligible stores are active without a setup step.

  • Opt out any time

Remove ChatGPT's access through Shopify Catalog.

How it works

From question to your checkout

ChatGPT users complete their purchase on your online store checkout. On the ChatGPT app that happens in an in-app browser; on the web it opens in a new tab.

Because the buyer lands on your own checkout, Shopify says your customizations, branding and payment methods are supported.

  1. A shopper asks ChatGPT

They describe what they want to buy.
  2. ChatGPT shows products

Your products can appear in discovery results.
  3. The shopper clicks through

They move from ChatGPT to your store.
  4. They pay on your checkout

The sale completes in your Shopify checkout.

Requirements

What Shopify requires from your store

Your store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based outside the U.S. B2B-only products are not supported for agentic storefronts.

Products covered by OpenAI's Prohibited products and services do not appear in ChatGPT product discovery results.

Your product data

Write product descriptions that work

Shopify advises including any relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of your product descriptions.

Treat the top of each description as the part that carries the facts: what the product is, who it is for and what it includes.

  • 6,000 characters

Put legal disclosures inside this limit.

Instant Checkout

Instant Checkout is a different route

OpenAI's Instant Checkout lets people buy without leaving the chat, powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, built with Stripe.

There, the merchant stays the merchant of record and pays a small fee on completed purchases. Shopify's channel instead sends buyers to your own store checkout.

Being found

Let ChatGPT crawl your store

OpenAI says that to be eligible for ChatGPT search, you must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site and allow traffic from its published IP addresses.

Opting out does not fully hide you: Shopify notes products may still be referenced through other methods, such as web crawling and indexing.

What to do

Get your store ready, step by step

OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT is not guaranteed, because it ranks results using multiple factors. These steps fix the problems you control.

  1. Check your eligibility

Confirm your store sells to U.S. customers and the ChatGPT channel is active.
  2. Allow OAI-SearchBot

Allow it in robots.txt and at your host or CDN.
  3. Tighten product descriptions

Put key facts and disclosures in the first 6,000 characters.
  4. Check restricted products

Review OpenAI's prohibited list against your catalog.
  5. Test real questions

Run your buyers' questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and note which businesses each one names.

Measuring

Measure whether it works

OpenAI says ChatGPT search connects people with original, high-quality content from the web. Ask ChatGPT what it says about your store. Note which buyer questions name you or your rivals.

  • Mentions

Is your brand named for your category questions?

  • Citations

Are your pages used as sources?

  • Competitors

Who is named instead of you?

  • Accuracy

Does ChatGPT show your products when shoppers look for them?
