GEO vs SEO

GEO vs SEO: the differences, and how to run both.

What is GEO vs SEO? What changes when an AI assistant writes the answer, what stays the same, and what 249 buyer questions show about AI answers and Google.

Short answer

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

GEO vs SEO: SEO ranks your pages in Google's results. GEO gets your brand cited in AI answers. In our test of 249 buyer questions, only 13% of cited sites ranked in Google's top 10.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • A different finish line

SEO wins a position in a list of links. GEO wins a mention inside the answer, where many readers stop.

  • Ranking is not citation

In our test, 56% of the AI answers cited no site from Google's top 10 for the same question.

  • The foundations are shared

Google says its AI features have no additional technical requirements. Crawlable, useful pages still come first.

  • Each assistant reads differently

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity rarely agree: 72% of the businesses they named came from only one of them.

  • You need both

SEO keeps you findable in Google. GEO makes you one of the few names an assistant gives.

Definitions

GEO and SEO, side by side.

SEO works to rank your pages in Google's results. LLMReach starts with a free AI audit, reviewed live with you, showing how your brand appears in AI answers. The full engagement builds on it.

GEO makes your brand easy for AI assistants to cite and recommend. A 2023 paper, accepted to KDD 2024, called it “the first novel paradigm” for content visibility in generative engine responses.

Our data

A Google rank doesn't make you a source.

In October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 250 buyer questions: ten in each of 25 industries. We searched the same questions on Google (US, desktop) that week and compared 249.

Of the 3,690 sites the assistants cited, 486, or 13%, ranked in Google's top 10 for the same question. Google's first result was cited by at least one assistant in 76 of the 249 questions.

Google itself

Google now answers before it lists.

The results page is changing too. In the same test, 201 of the 249 questions, or 81%, showed an AI Overview above the organic results.

When an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page gets fewer clicks. Ahrefs linked it to a “58% lower average clickthrough rate.” Ranking first still matters, but it is not enough.

What stays the same

GEO builds on SEO. It doesn't replace it.

GEO does not replace SEO, so moving from SEO to GEO is no restart. Google says of its AI features: “There are no additional technical requirements.” Its guide adds that SEO best practices stay relevant.

Google's AI features rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems to retrieve pages. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.

  • Crawlable, indexable pages

A page that cannot be reached or indexed cannot be ranked or cited.

  • Useful, original content

Google says unique, compelling, useful content will likely matter most for presence in AI search over the long run.

  • Quality and trust

Google says trust is the most important E-E-A-T aspect; E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor.

  • Plain, honest signals

Google says inauthentic mentions across the web are not as helpful as they might seem.

What changes

Where GEO asks for more.

The difference between traditional SEO and GEO is where the work happens. SEO focuses on your own pages and their links. GEO adds the other places assistants read, and checks each assistant separately.

  • Answer-first pages

State the claim and the facts first, so an assistant can lift each one on its own.

  • Presence beyond your site

Assistants draw on directories, reviews and community threads, so the facts there must match your site.

  • Every assistant on its own

Across our 25 industries, 72% of the businesses named came from only one of the three assistants.

  • Citations, not positions

Success is counted in mentions across the questions buyers ask, not in a rank for one keyword.

Myths

Not everything needs to change.

Much GEO advice online is not supported. Google notes that terms like AEO and GEO are common, but says many suggested “hacks” are not effective or supported by how its Search works.

Working together

Run SEO and GEO as one plan.

Can SEO and GEO strategies work together? Yes, and they should share one plan. Start from the SEO work you already do, then add the parts assistants need.

  1. Audit both

Check your Google rankings and run your buyers' questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
  2. Fix the foundations

Make sure crawlers can reach your key pages, and that the pages are indexed and readable.
  3. Rewrite key pages answer-first

Put the direct answer and the specific facts at the top of the pages that matter most.
  4. Build presence on cited sources

Complete your profiles on the directories, review sites and communities assistants cite in your category.
  5. Measure both

Track rankings and clicks for SEO, and citations for GEO, against a baseline taken before the work starts.

FAQ

GEO vs SEO: common questions.

Can GEO replace traditional SEO? Should I do GEO instead of SEO?

GEO does not replace SEO. Google says the same foundational SEO best practices apply to its AI features, which rest on its core ranking systems. GEO adds work beyond your own pages and per-assistant measurement. In our test, 56% of AI answers cited no top-10 site.

Is generative engine optimization the same as traditional SEO?

Generative engine optimization is not the same as traditional SEO, though they overlap. Both need crawlable pages, useful content and trust. SEO aims at a position in a list of results; GEO aims at being cited or named inside an AI answer, which depends on what an assistant can confirm across many sources.

How does geo overlap with traditional SEO?

GEO overlaps with SEO on the foundations: indexable pages, useful original content and trust. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. The work differs in extra steps such as presence on cited sources and measuring citations per assistant.

Does ranking first on Google get me into ChatGPT?

Ranking first on Google does not reliably get you into ChatGPT. In our test of 249 buyer questions, Google's first result was cited by at least one of ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in 76 of them. Only 13% of all cited sites ranked in Google's top 10.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO targets ranked results in search engines. GEO targets the answers AI assistants write. AEO, answer engine optimization, targets being the direct answer an engine quotes. In practice GEO and AEO describe closely related work, and our AEO vs GEO guide covers the overlap.

How do I integrate GEO with SEO?

Integrating GEO with SEO means building on what you already do. Audit rankings and AI answers together, keep key pages crawlable and indexed, rewrite them answer-first, complete profiles on the sources assistants cite, and measure citations next to rankings against a baseline.

How do you measure GEO compared with SEO?

SEO is measured in rankings, clicks and organic traffic. GEO is measured in citations: how often your brand is named, and your pages cited, across an agreed set of buyer questions in each assistant, against a baseline taken before the work begins.
