Financial services GEO

GEO best practices for financial services.

How advisory firms, wealth managers and financial products become the names AI assistants give when prospects ask who to trust with their money, with figures from our own test.

Short answer

What are the GEO best practices for financial services?

GEO best practices for financial services: research prospect prompts, make advisor pages crawlable by AI, write compliance-ready answer-first pages, and keep directory profiles complete and consistent. That builds wealth management AI search visibility.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • Prospects ask AI first

Questions like 'best fee-only financial advisor for tech executives' now get an answer that names a few firms.

  • Assistants rarely agree

In our test, three assistants named 157 firms. Only 5 were named by all three.

  • Directories carry weight

Assistants drew mainly from Expertise.com, SmartAsset, NAPFA and the Fee-Only Network, not from firm homepages.

  • Cautious copy gives nothing to quote

Compliance-approved text that says little leaves an assistant with nothing specific to repeat.

  • Compliance stays in the loop

Every page is written to pass your review and goes live only after your compliance team approves it.

Why it matters

Prospects ask AI who to trust.

Your buyers research before they call. The answer an assistant gives names a few firms, and the prospect books one of them. A firm that is not named is not considered.

Our data

Assistants name different firms.

We tested six cities and 30 answers. Three AI assistants named 157 different firms. Only 5 were named by all three, and 131 were named by just one.

Winning one assistant does not win the others. Each one needs its own check.

Where answers come from

Assistants cite directories, not homepages.

In the same test, the most-cited sources were directories. Each assistant draws from different ones: only Perplexity cited SmartAsset, and only Gemini cited Google Maps.

Firm websites are rarely the source. A firm with complete profiles gives assistants something to confirm.

The compliance gap

Cautious copy leaves nothing to quote.

Financial copy goes through compliance review, so it tends to say little that can be checked. An assistant then names Forbes Advisor, NerdWallet or a firm whose credentials it can confirm.

The fix is not looser copy. It is specific claims that can be checked, with no performance promises and the disclosures your firm requires.

What to do

Four best practices, in order.

These steps give ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini something specific and verifiable to name. Start with the questions, then the access, then the pages, then the profiles.

  1. Research prospect prompts

Map what clients ask AI, by specialty and city, and agree the set before work begins.
  2. Fix technical access

Make advisor and specialty pages readable by AI crawlers, with schema, crawler access and a clean sitemap.
  3. Write answer-first pages

Lead with who you serve and how you charge. Keep claims checkable and approved by compliance.
  4. Align directory profiles

Complete and match your profiles on the directories assistants cite for your category.
  5. Track against a baseline

Count citations across the agreed prompts in each assistant, before and after the work.

Firm type

RIAs, broker-dealers and products differ.

The same method covers wealth management, financial planning, retirement income and tax strategy, plus fintech and venture capital firms. The emphasis changes with the firm.

  • RIAs

A sharp specialty and a clear fiduciary statement carry the most weight.

  • Broker-dealers

Consistent regulatory profiles across every advisor matter most.

  • Financial products

Clear comparison and pricing pages let the product be named.

  • Venture capital

Founders and limited partners ask AI which funds invest in their space.

Measuring

How to measure the work.

Count citations of your firm across the agreed prospect prompts in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. Take a baseline before work begins.

Track the visitors AI assistants send to your site in GA4. A mention alone does not prove pipeline, so read both.

  • Mentions

Is your firm named in answers to the prospect questions that matter?

  • Citations

Is your own site used as a source, or only third-party pages?

  • Competitors

Which firms are named instead of you, and from which sources?

  • Visits

How many visitors do AI assistants send to your site?

FAQ

Financial services GEO: common questions.

What are the GEO best practices for financial services firms?

GEO best practices for financial services cover four areas: prospect prompt research, technical schema so advisor and specialty pages can be read by AI crawlers, answer-first content written to pass compliance review, and directory consistency across the profiles assistants draw from.

Why do assistants cite Forbes Advisor and NerdWallet instead of firm websites?

Assistants cite those sites, and directories like Expertise.com, SmartAsset, NAPFA and the Fee-Only Network, because they hold structured, independently verifiable information about advisors. Most firm websites do not. The fix is specific, extractable pages plus complete, consistent directory profiles.

Are prospects using ChatGPT to find a financial advisor instead of asking for referrals?

Some already do. In our test across 6 cities and 30 answers, three assistants named 157 different firms, and only 5 appeared in all three. A firm with complete directory profiles gives assistants something to confirm; one relying only on referrals gives them little.

Is GEO the same as AEO, AI SEO or LLM optimization for financial advisors?

GEO, AEO, AI SEO and LLM optimization are different names for the same work. Each aims at one result: your firm being one of the advisors an AI assistant names when a prospect asks. Agencies differ in method, not goal.

How do you compare GEO agencies for financial services?

Ask three questions before you sign: which prospect prompts will be tracked, in which assistants and against what baseline; which directory profiles will be updated; and how compliance review is built into the content process. An agency unable to answer all three in writing is not ready.

Does compliance review block GEO work?

No. Every page is written to pass your review: specific claims that can be checked, no performance promises and the disclosures your firm requires. Nothing goes live until your compliance team approves it.

How do you measure GEO for a financial firm?

Measure citations of your firm across the agreed prospect prompts in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, against a baseline taken before work begins. Also track the visitors AI assistants send to your site in GA4.
