GEO

What is generative engine optimization? A plain guide to GEO.

What is GEO, where the term comes from, what the research measured, and the steps a business takes to be cited in the answers AI assistants write.

Short answer

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization makes your brand easy for AI assistants to cite and recommend. Think ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. The goal is to be named inside the answer, not only ranked.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • GEO stands for generative engine optimization

It is the work of being cited in answers that AI systems synthesize from several sources.

  • The term is academic

It was introduced in a paper first submitted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024.

  • Assistants cite, they do not rank

Buyers get one answer with a few sources. A brand that is not cited is not considered.

  • Google keeps the basics

Google says SEO best practices stay relevant and that its AI features have no additional technical requirements.

  • You measure citations

Track mentions and citations across agreed buyer questions, against a baseline taken before work starts.

The definition

GEO stands for generative engine optimization.

Generative engines synthesize information from several sources and summarize it with large language models. GEO is the work of making your content visible in those answers.

In marketing, GEO means being named and cited where buyers now ask their questions: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini.

  • Generative engine

A system that gathers sources and writes one answer with a language model.

  • Optimization

Changes to your pages and presence that make them easier to retrieve and cite.

  • The goal

A mention or a citation inside the answer, not a position in a list.

  • The same idea, other names

Generative search optimization and AI GEO describe this same work.

Where it comes from

The research behind the term.

The term appeared in a paper by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors, first submitted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 and last revised on 28 June 2024. It was accepted to KDD 2024.

The authors built GEO-bench, a large benchmark of user queries across domains, to test strategies systematically.

How it works

How AI assistants pick their sources.

ChatGPT decides on its own whether to search the web. It typically rewrites your question into targeted queries before sending them to search partners, and answers can include source links.

Perplexity searches in real time and attaches numbered citations to every answer. Google uses its core ranking systems to retrieve pages for AI responses and may fan a question out into related queries.

  1. A buyer asks a question

The assistant decides whether it needs fresh information from the web.
  2. The question is rewritten

ChatGPT turns it into targeted queries. Google may fan it out into related ones.
  3. Sources are retrieved

Crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot supply the pages the engines can use.
  4. One answer is written

The model summarizes the sources and cites a few of them with links.

Why it matters

If AI doesn't cite you, it skips you.

Assistants return one answer with a few sources, not ten links. Rivals named for your category take the shortlist before a buyer reaches your site.

Strong rankings do not settle this. In our October 2026 test of 249 buyer questions, only 13% of the sites the assistants cited ranked in Google's top 10 for the same question.

Google's view

What Google says about GEO.

Google says normal SEO best practices still apply to its AI features. To appear as a supporting link, your page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Google also says terms like AEO and GEO are common online, but that many suggested hacks are not effective or supported by how Search works.

What to do

How to do GEO, step by step.

GEO optimization starts with the prompts your buyers use and ends with citations you can measure. This is the roadmap we follow at LLMReach, which we call the Citation Stack.

  1. Research the buyer prompts

Identify the questions buyers ask before they decide, and agree them before work begins.
  2. Fix technical access

Let AI crawlers reach and read your key pages: robots.txt, rendering, schema and entity signals.
  3. Write answer-first pages

Give assistants specific facts they can quote, built for the agreed prompts.
  4. Build presence off your site

Earn genuine presence in the communities and sources buyers trust. No spam, no automation.
  5. Track against a baseline

Measure citations across the agreed prompts, with a baseline taken before any work starts.

Measure it

How to measure a GEO program.

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT answers. Answers change by platform, prompt and week, so you track a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule.

Keep the metrics apart. A brand can be mentioned without its site being cited, and a single score hides the gap that needs action.

Common mistakes

Mistakes that stall GEO.

Most stalled programs share a few causes. Fix the cause before adding tactics.

  • Blocking the crawlers

Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

  • Writing to rank, not to be quoted

Pages with nothing specific to repeat leave the assistant nothing to cite.

  • Mass pages for every variation

Google says doing this to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.

  • Treating citations as a guarantee

OpenAI says ChatGPT placement is not assured, and results can be incomplete or incorrect.

  • Skipping the baseline

Without one, you cannot tell whether any change worked.

FAQ

GEO: common questions.

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and co-authors, accepted to KDD 2024. It describes optimizing content so it appears in the answers that generative engines write from several sources.

What is GEO in marketing?

GEO in marketing is the work of getting your brand mentioned and cited in AI-written answers. Marketers plan it around the questions buyers ask assistants, then measure mentions and citations against a baseline rather than watching a keyword ranking.

Is GEO the same as AEO or generative search optimization?

The names overlap. AEO began with featured snippets and voice answers; GEO comes from the 2023 paper on generative engines. Generative search optimization describes the same goal. In practice, the same work serves both: pages written to be cited.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant because its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. GEO adds work outside your own pages and measurement of citations in each assistant.

Do I need an llms.txt file for GEO?

Google says its Search, including its generative AI features, does not use llms.txt or other special AI files, so you don't need one for Google. LLMReach includes llms.txt in its technical work as one signal among several.

Can anyone promise AI citations?

No assistant assures placement. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not assured. A GEO program diagnoses gaps and sets a baseline; judge any promise by what is measured against that baseline.

How long does a GEO program take?

LLMReach runs its engagement in a 90-day window, with a baseline taken before work begins, weekly updates and a review every two weeks. Expect to set the baseline first, then read changes against it rather than expecting results in a few weeks.
