What is GEO citation work?+
GEO citation work makes your brand easy for AI assistants to cite and recommend in their answers. It covers answer-first content, tracking which URLs engines cite, and whether those citations point to your pages or to other sources.
How is GEO different from SEO?+
GEO aims at being named or linked inside an AI answer, not at a position in a list of results. It shares foundations with SEO, but it is measured by citations per prompt and platform instead of rank and clicks.
Do I need an llms.txt file to be cited?+
Google says its Search, including its AI features, does not use llms.txt or other special AI files, so you do not need one there. Other engines may differ. Treat llms.txt as optional, not as a route to citations.
Which crawlers should I allow for AI citations?+
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot controls inclusion in ChatGPT search, and Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot. Googlebot covers Google's AI features. Allow them in robots.txt and at your firewall or CDN, since blocked pages cannot be cited.
Can anyone promise AI citations?+
No engine promises placement. OpenAI says ChatGPT search placement is not assured, and Google says AI Overviews often do not trigger. Treat any promise of a specific citation with caution and ask how results are measured.
How do you measure AI citations?+
Measure a fixed set of buyer prompts on each platform and record whether you are mentioned, cited, or absent, plus who is named instead. Capture the exact prompt and source each time, and compare against a baseline taken before work starts.
How long does this work take?+
Access fixes and page rewrites can be done in weeks, but citations move by platform, prompt and week, so judge results over a window. LLMReach works in a 90-day window measured against your own baseline.
