AI visibility
AI visibility: is your brand in the answer?
What AI search visibility means, why a brand can rank in Google and still be missing from ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, and how to measure it.
Short answer
What does it mean?
AI visibility is how often AI assistants name your brand or cite your site in answers to buyer questions. Also called LLM visibility. An assistant gives one answer with a few sources, not ten links.
In brief
Five things to know first.
One answer, few sources
Assistants return one answer with a few sources. A brand that is not cited is not considered.
Ranking is not citation
In our test, 56% of AI answers cited no site from Google's top 10 for the same question.
Mention and citation differ
A brand can be named without its site being cited. Track both, and track them separately.
No Search Console for AI
Answers change by platform, prompt and week, so you need your own tracking against a baseline.
One score hides the gap
Mentions, citations, position, sentiment and sources should not be averaged into one number.
Definition
What is AI visibility?
It is whether your brand appears in the answers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini write for your buyers' questions. Your brand may be named, your site may be cited, or both.
| Google rank | Brand presence in AI answers | |
|---|---|---|
| What the buyer sees | A list of links to choose from | One answer with a few sources |
| What you win | A position on the page | A mention or a citation |
| Cost of absence | Lower on a long list | Not considered at all |
| How you check | Rank trackers and Search Console | Repeated prompts across assistants |
Our data
Ranking in Google does not mean cited.
In October 2026 we asked 250 buyer questions, ten in each of 25 industries, to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and searched the same questions on Google (US, desktop) that week. We compared 249.
Of the 3,690 sites the assistants cited, 486, or 13%, ranked in Google's top 10 for the same question.
| Assistant | Sites cited | Beyond Google's top 10 | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1053 | 113 | 10.7% |
| Gemini | 635 | 85 | 13.4% |
| Perplexity | 2002 | 288 | 14.4% |
| All three | 3690 | 486 | 13.2% |
Why now
Buyers read the answer, not the list.
AI engines cite; they do not rank. Your result depends on whether assistants name your brand in answers. In LLMReach's test of 249 buyer questions, only 13% of cited sites ranked in Google's top 10.
Rivals named for your category take the shortlist before a buyer reaches your site.

How to measure
AI visibility scoring: one metric each.
A single score hides the gap that needs action. Keep each metric separate, so each answers its own question.
| Metric | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Visibility | How often do you appear in answers? |
| Mention | Is your brand named in the text? |
| Citation | Is your page linked as a source? |
| Share of voice | What share of brand mentions is yours? |
| Average position | Where do you appear when named? |
| Sentiment and sources | How are you described, and by whom? |
Tracking
LLM visibility tracking, without a dashboard.
Most AI answers have no Search Console equivalent. Bing's AI Performance report is a start: it shows citation counts and sampled grounding queries, but only across Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations.
For the rest, you track agreed prompts on a schedule and keep the exact prompt and platform for every capture.
Agree the prompt set
Pick the questions buyers ask, by stage and platform, before you measure anything.
Take a baseline first
Record where you stand before any work, so later changes are read against it.
Repeat on a schedule
Answers change by platform, prompt and week. One screenshot proves little.
Keep the evidence
Store prompt, platform and capture for each result so anyone can reproduce it.
What to do
How to improve AI search visibility.
This work starts with the prompts and ends with citations you can measure. Work in this order.
Define the buyer prompts
List the questions your buyers ask before they decide, and agree them before work begins.Set a baseline
Record mentions, citations and share of voice against two or three competitors.Fix access and structure
Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot, and keep key content in the raw HTML.Write answer-first pages
Give each agreed prompt a page that states the answer and the facts first.Strengthen trust signals
Keep your facts consistent across your site, profiles and the communities buyers trust.Track and report
Review citations against your baseline, and let the gaps choose the next task.

The audit gives you a prompt-level gap map and a prioritized 90-day roadmap. You keep the data either way.
Where to start
An AI visibility report, read as a diagnosis.
A useful audit shows the prompts where you appear or are absent, who is named instead, and the sources behind those answers. It cannot prove revenue impact or guarantee citations.
Coverage gaps
The questions where your brand is absent from the answer.
Citation gaps
Where you are named but your own page is not cited.
Competitive gaps
Who is named instead of you, and from which sources.
Source patterns
The pages and communities the answers draw on.
FAQ
AI visibility: common questions.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is a text reference to your brand in an AI answer. A citation is a link to one of your pages used as a source. A brand can be mentioned without a citation, so track the two metrics separately.
What is a visibility score, and is one score enough?
A visibility score condenses how often you appear in answers into one number. One score hides the gap that needs action, so read it next to mentions, citations, share of voice, position and cited sources.
How does it differ from SEO rank tracking?
SEO rank tracking measures where pages appear in search results. GEO tracking measures whether brands, URLs and sources appear inside generated answers. The unit differs, so the tracking workflow differs too.
How do you improve it?
GEO work starts by mapping the buyer prompts your audience uses, then engineers answer-first content, fixes technical AEO signals and tracks citations against your own baseline. LLMReach targets a 30% rise in total citations within 90 days, and keeps working at no extra cost if it falls short.
Do Google or OpenAI offer tracking for it?
Partly. Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries. For ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, you track your own buyer prompts and read citations against a baseline.
Does this work prove business impact?
No. A mention, citation or visibility gain does not by itself prove traffic, pipeline or revenue. Connect the findings with your own analytics and commercial data before you claim business impact.
Which AI platforms should you track?
Track the assistants your buyers use. LLMReach covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, plus Google's AI features where relevant. Platforms rarely agree, so each is read on its own.
