AI search engine optimization: what changes, what stays.

What is AI SEO? It is SEO for AI search: what Google says still applies, what changes when ChatGPT or an AI Overview writes the answer, and the steps to take.

Short answer

What is AI search engine optimization?

AI search engine optimization, or AI SEO, makes your pages findable and useful when AI features and assistants write the answer. Google says standard SEO best practices still apply to its AI features.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • SEO still applies

Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.

  • No special markup needed

Google says you don't need llms.txt or other AI-only files to appear in its AI features.

  • Unique content matters most

Google says unique, useful content will likely influence AI presence more than any other suggestion.

  • Access decides eligibility

Pages must be indexed in Google, and OpenAI's crawler must be allowed for ChatGPT search.

  • Measure it separately

Rankings do not show whether assistants mention or cite you. Track both.

Definition

What AI SEO is and its other names

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini write answers naming brands. If you're not named, buyers may miss you. Rank won't fix that: in our 249-question test, only 13% of cited sites ranked top 10.

Other names for the same work are AI search optimization, AI engine optimization, GEO and AEO. The names differ more than the work does.

How it works

How AI search engines pick pages.

Google describes retrieval-augmented generation: its AI features rely on core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages, then show links to pages that support the response.

AI search can also fan out: the model generates related queries to fetch more results. ChatGPT similarly rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries before it searches.

  1. The question is rewritten

The model turns your buyer's question into one or more related search queries.
  2. Pages are retrieved

Search systems pull relevant, current pages from their index.
  3. An answer is written

The model synthesizes the pages into one response.
  4. Sources are shown

Links to supporting pages appear with the answer, where the engine includes them.

What Google says

SEO for AI search: what still applies.

To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google adds that there are no additional technical requirements.

That makes AI search engine optimization an extension of SEO, not a new discipline built on separate tricks.

  • Indexed and snippet-eligible

Google's bar for supporting links in AI features: indexed and snippet-eligible, with no additional technical requirements.

  • Helpful, reliable content

Google's ranking systems prioritize content created to benefit people, not to manipulate rankings.

  • Trust above all

Among the E-E-A-T aspects, Google says trust is the most important.

  • Sound technical basics

Crawlable pages with a snippet are the base layer for everything else.

What you can skip

AI SEO myths Google addresses.

Google says many suggested hacks for AEO or GEO are not effective or supported by how Search works. Its guide names several things you do not need to do for its AI features.

What Google says you do not need for its AI features
Common claimWhat Google says
You need llms.txtNo special AI files or markup needed; Search doesn't use them.
Break content into chunksNo requirement, and no ideal page length.
Rewrite pages for AIAI systems understand synonyms and general meanings.
Special schema is requiredStructured data isn't required for generative AI search.
Make a page per query variationDoing so to manipulate responses violates scaled content abuse policy.

What to do

How to optimize for AI search.

Start with eligibility and original content, then add the parts that assistants need. This is the order to work in.

  1. Confirm access

Check Google can index your key pages. For ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt.
  2. Pick your buyer questions

List the questions your buyers ask AI before they decide, by stage and engine.
  3. Create non-commodity content

Add expert, first-hand detail Google calls non-commodity, not common knowledge anyone could write.
  4. Lead with the answer

Put the direct answer and the key facts first on each page, so it reads cleanly alone.
  5. Check sources beyond your site

Note which directories, reviews and communities answers draw on, and keep your facts consistent.
  6. Track and adjust

Record mentions and citations against a baseline, then change what the data points to.

Using AI to write

AI-driven SEO content: where Google draws the line.

Google allows generative AI as a research and structuring aid. But using it to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy.

Google also says to fact-check AI-generated content before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions and structured data.

AcceptableRisky
PurposeResearch and structure that help usersMany pages made to manipulate rankings
OversightFact-checked and reviewed by a personPublished at scale without oversight
AuthorshipAccurate bylines and disclosure where expectedMade-up names, headshots or credentials

Measurement

How to track AI SEO results.

Google offers a Generative AI performance report in Search Console to see how people discover your content through its AI features. For assistants, there is no equivalent console.

Track mentions, citations, share of voice and cited sources across a fixed set of buyer questions, against a baseline.

  • Mentions

Whether the assistant names your brand in its answer.

  • Citations

Whether a link to your page appears. A brand can be mentioned without being cited.

  • Share of voice

Your mentions against competitors in the same answers.

  • Cited sources

The pages and sites the answers draw on, which show where to act.

FAQ

AI SEO: common questions.

Is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?

AI SEO builds on traditional SEO rather than replacing it. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant because its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. What changes is the outcome: being cited or named inside a written answer, not only ranked in a list.

Do I need llms.txt to appear in AI search?

Google says no: you don't need llms.txt files or other AI-specific markup to appear in Google Search, including its AI features, because Search doesn't use them. LLMReach does set up llms.txt as part of its technical work for other AI engines, so treat it as optional, not required.

How do I get my site into ChatGPT search answers?

ChatGPT search requires that OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site and that your host or CDN allows OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. OpenAI also says placement is not guaranteed, because ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors.

What are the best AI SEO strategies?

Effective AI SEO strategies start with access and original content. Keep pages indexable, write expert detail beyond common knowledge, lead each page with the answer, keep facts consistent across directories and communities, and track mentions and citations against a baseline rather than relying on rankings alone.

Should I create a separate page for every question variation?

Generally no. Google says creating separate pages for every query variation or fan-out query, primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses, violates its scaled content abuse spam policy. Write fewer pages that answer the topic well and add unique value instead.

How do I track AI SEO performance?

Google's Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows how people find your content through Google's AI features. For assistants, track a fixed set of buyer questions, record the exact prompt and platform each time, and compare against a baseline.

Can AI tools write my SEO content?

AI tools can help with research and structure, but Google warns that generating many pages without adding user value may violate its spam policy. Fact-check everything before publishing, including metadata, and add the first-hand expertise AI cannot supply.

Can LLMReach promise AI citations?

LLMReach commits to the engagement as a whole: a 30% increase in total citations across your site, measured against your own baseline within 90 days, or it keeps working at no extra cost. No single tactic, mention or audit on its own ensures a citation.
