AEO guide

What is answer engine optimization? Be the answer.

What AEO stands for, how AI assistants pick what to quote, and the steps that make your pages and facts easy to cite.

Short answer

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) makes your pages and facts the direct answer AI assistants quote. What is AEO in marketing? Your goal shifts from ranking a link to being the source inside the answer.

In brief

Five things to know first.

  • What AEO stands for

Answer engine optimization: shaping content so engines can lift it as the direct answer.

  • One answer, few sources

Assistants return one answer with a few sources, not ten links. A brand that is not cited is not considered.

  • Answer first

Pages written to rank, not to be quoted, leave the assistant nothing specific to repeat.

  • Access comes first

OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

  • Measure citations

There is no Search Console for AI answers. Track mentions and citations against a baseline.

AEO definition

AEO definition, in plain words.

AEO now shapes content for AI answers, not just snippets. Ranking alone falls short: in LLMReach's test of 249 buyer questions, only 13% of cited sites ranked in Google's top 10.

Google describes featured snippets as special boxes “where the format of a regular search result is reversed, showing the descriptive snippet first.”

Answer engines

How answer engines pick sources

These tools search, read several sources, and write one reply. Perplexity says it searches the internet in real time and distills what it finds into a concise summary with numbered citations.

ChatGPT decides itself when to search. OpenAI says it “typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries.”

Google

What Google says about AI answers

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It adds: “There are no additional technical requirements.”

It also says that “all existing SEO fundamentals continue to be worthwhile.” You cannot mark a page as a featured snippet yourself; Google's systems decide.

  • Indexed with a snippet

Pages must be eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be linked in AI features.

  • Related searches

AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue several related searches across subtopics.

  • Different models

AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models, so their links vary.

  • Reported in Search Console

Clicks from AI features show in the Performance report under the Web search type.

Access

Let the answer engines read you

An engine cannot quote what it cannot reach. OpenAI says to allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, and Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and its published IP ranges.

Sites behind a firewall may need to allow these bots explicitly.

  • Allow the search crawlers

Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, plus their published IP ranges.

  • Check your firewall

A WAF may block these bots unless you allow them by user agent and IP.

  • Search and training differ

OpenAI says you can allow OAI-SearchBot and still disallow GPTBot, which relates to training.

  • Expect a delay

OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.

How to do it

AEO strategy, step by step

An AEO strategy starts with questions, not keywords. LLMReach's approach is the Citation Stack: prompts, technical fixes, content, community presence and tracking.

  1. Research the buyer prompts

List the questions your buyers ask before they decide, and agree them before any work begins.
  2. Fix technical access

Open crawler access, add schema and make key content readable in the raw HTML.
  3. Write answer-first pages

Put the direct answer first, so each claim can be extracted on its own.
  4. Build presence off your site

Earn genuine presence in the communities and sources buyers trust. No spam, no automation.
  5. Track against a baseline

Record citations across the agreed prompts before work starts, then review them regularly.

Measurement

Measure AEO search results

There is no Search Console for AI answers. Results change by platform, prompt and week, so one screenshot proves little.

Keep each metric separate. A brand can be mentioned without its site being cited.

Mistakes

Common AEO mistakes to avoid

Most AEO mistakes come from treating answers like rankings. The fix is usually simpler than teams expect.

  • Blocking AI crawlers

Blocked crawlers never read the pages you want cited.

  • Hiding content in JavaScript

Content that only appears with JavaScript may be invisible to crawlers reading raw HTML.

  • Averaging one score

A single score hides the gap that needs action. Track mentions and citations apart.

  • Expecting certain results

OpenAI says it does not promise ChatGPT placement to any site.

FAQ

AEO: common questions.

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The practice makes your pages and facts the direct answer that search features and AI assistants quote, so buyers see your brand inside the answer rather than only in a list of links.

What is AEO in marketing?

AEO in marketing is the work of getting your brand cited or named in AI-written answers. Buyers increasingly research with assistants, so marketers track mentions and citations next to rankings and clicks.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

AEO aims to be the quoted answer, while SEO aims to rank a page. They share foundations: Google says its existing SEO fundamentals continue to apply to AI features, with no additional technical requirements.

Does this work need special technical setup?

Google says AI features have no additional technical requirements beyond Search eligibility. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permit their published IP ranges, because blocked crawlers cannot read your pages.

How do you measure AEO results?

AEO results are measured as mentions, citations, share of voice, average position and cited sources across an agreed set of buyer questions, against a baseline taken before work begins. Each metric is tracked separately.

Can AEO promise citations?

AEO cannot promise citations. OpenAI states that placement in ChatGPT search is not assured. Sites opted out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, do not appear in ChatGPT search answers, so crawler access matters.

Is a mention the same as a citation?

A mention is a text reference to your brand in an answer, while a citation is a link to a page used as a source. A brand can be mentioned without its site being cited, so track both.
