AI Visibility Score

AI visibility score: what it shows and what it hides.

A GEO score gives you one number for how you appear in AI answers. Here is what sits behind it, what it cannot prove and how to read it.

Short answer

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score, sometimes called a GEO score, is one number for how often your brand appears in AI answers across a set of buyer questions. It summarizes the evidence; it does not replace it.

In brief

Four things to know first.

  • One number, many inputs

A score rolls up visibility, mentions, citations, share of voice, position, sentiment and sources for a defined question set.

  • A single score hides the gap

An average can look fine while you are absent from the questions that matter. Read each metric on its own.

  • It depends on the prompts

The same brand scores differently on a different set of questions, platforms or weeks. Compare like with like.

  • It does not prove revenue

A higher score is not traffic or pipeline. Check it against your own analytics before you claim impact.

Definition

What the score rolls up.

No standard formula exists. Each tool builds its own score, so a number from one tool cannot be compared with another's. Ask what goes into it.

LLMReach's AI visibility audit keeps these measures separate for a defined set of buyer questions.

MetricWhat it answers
VisibilityVisibilityHow often you appear in answers
MentionsMentionsNamed in the text of an answer

Position and sentimentPosition and sentimentWhere you appear and how you are described

Limits

What a score cannot tell you.

A single score hides the gap that needs action. A brand can be mentioned without its site being cited, and a good average can sit on top of blind spots.

A higher score does not prove traffic, pipeline or revenue. Connect it to your own analytics and commercial data first.

  • Which questions you miss

An average does not show the buyer prompts where you are absent.

  • Who is named instead

A score shows your result, not the competitors taking the shortlist.

  • Which sources decide

It does not show the pages and communities the answers draw on.

  • Business impact

Presence in answers is not proof of sales.

How to read it

Read the score in five steps.

Treat the score as a prompt to investigate, not a verdict. The steps below turn one number into a next action.

  1. Check the question set

Confirm the score covers the buyer questions that matter to you, not a generic list.
  2. Check the platforms

Note which assistants were tested. A score from one assistant says little about the others.
  3. Split it into its metrics

Read visibility, mentions, citations, share of voice and position separately.
  4. Compare with rivals

Look at who is named in your place and which sources back those answers.
  5. Re-measure against a baseline

Track the score on the same prompts over time. Answers change by platform, prompt and week.

Platform data

Platform tools show part of it.

About 58% of Pew's respondents ran a Google search in March 2025 that showed an AI summary. So track how often AI answers mention your brand, and in what position.

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside Search Console's overall search traffic, not as a separate AI report.

  • Bing

Reports total citations and cited pages, not rank, authority or placement.

  • Google

AI feature traffic sits inside the overall search traffic in Search Console.

  • Your tracker

Track the exact prompt, platform and capture so any result can be reproduced.

What to do

Use the score to guide the work.

Start with a baseline before any work. Then choose the fix from the gap, not from the headline number.

  • Absent from questions

Build or rewrite the pages that should answer them, answer-first.

  • Named but not cited

Make your pages easier to reach, read and quote.

  • Rivals named instead

Study which sources they appear in and build presence there.

  • Score moves, sales do not

Check the buyer questions and your own analytics before you celebrate.

FAQ

This AI metric: common questions.

What is a GEO score?

A GEO score is one number for how your brand appears in AI-generated answers. There is no standard formula, so the inputs and question set decide what it means. Ask what a given score includes before you trust it.

What does a score for AI answer visibility measure?

An AI visibility score summarizes how often your brand appears in AI answers for a defined set of buyer questions. Separate measures sit underneath: mentions, citations, share of voice, average position, sentiment and cited sources. A brand can have high visibility but low share of voice when competitors appear more often.

Is a higher score for AI answer visibility always better?

A higher score is not automatically better visibility. The score can rise while you stay absent from the questions that matter, or rise because the question set changed. A mention, citation or visibility gain does not by itself show traffic, pipeline or revenue.

Can I compare scores from different tools?

Scores from different tools are not directly comparable. Each tool chooses its own prompts, platforms and weighting, so the same brand can score differently. Compare a score only against earlier results from the same tool, on the same prompts, ideally against a baseline.

How does tracking AI answer visibility differ from a Google ranking?

A Google ranking is a position in a list of results. This kind of score reflects whether your brand is named or cited inside generated answers. The unit of measurement is different, so the tracking is too. Citations are counted across prompts, not as one position.

How do I improve my visibility in AI answers?

Improving the score starts with the gap, not the number. Check whether you are absent from questions, named but not cited, or losing to rivals. Then fix crawler access, rewrite key pages answer-first and build presence on the sources assistants cite.
