AI Share of Voice
What AI share of voice is and how to track
How often AI assistants name your brand compared with competitors, what the number can and cannot tell you, and how to build a baseline you can trust.
Short answer
What does it mean?
AI share of voice is your brand's share of all tracked brand mentions in AI answers, set against competitors. It shows whether assistants name you or your rivals more often for the buyer questions you agreed to track.
In brief
Four things to know first.
A share, not a count
It compares your mentions with competitors' mentions in the same set of answers, so it shows relative standing.
Different from visibility
A brand can appear often yet hold a low share if rivals appear more often in the same answers.
Only as good as the prompts
The number depends on the buyer questions and platforms you track. Agree both before you read the result.
A baseline, not a guarantee
It shows where you stand and what to fix. It does not prove traffic, pipeline or revenue by itself.
Definition
AI share of voice, in plain words.
Assistants return one answer with a few sources, not ten links. This metric measures how much of that limited space your brand holds against competitors.
LLMReach defines it as your share of all brand mentions, against the competitors named in the same answers.
| Visibility | Share of voice in AI answers | |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | How often your brand appears in AI responses | Your share of all tracked brand mentions |
| Compared with | Your own past results | Competitors in the same answers |
| Can mislead when | Rivals appear far more often | The prompt set is too narrow |
How it works
How the number is built.
You choose buyer prompts, run them across the assistants, and record every brand named in each answer. Your share is your mentions divided by all tracked mentions.
A mention is a text reference to your brand. A citation is a link to your page. A brand can be mentioned without being cited, so track both.

Why it matters
Why share of voice matters.
Rivals named for your category take the shortlist before a buyer reaches your site. A share figure shows how much of that shortlist you hold.
Google's AI features also change clicks. Pew found users clicked a result link in 8% of visits with an AI summary, versus 15% without one.

Limits
What the number can't tell you.
There is no Search Console for AI answers, and results shift by platform, prompt and week. Read share of voice as one metric among several.
Keep mentions, citations, position and sentiment separate. A single score hides the gap that needs action.
Not a revenue claim
A higher share does not by itself prove traffic, pipeline or revenue. Check it against your own analytics.
Not a certain outcome
No audit can promise citations. It diagnoses gaps and sets the baseline later work is measured against.
Prompt set decides the result
A different question list gives a different share. Record the prompts alongside the figure.
Platforms differ
Google offers no AI share metric, but Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations for Copilot and Bing summaries, from a sample.
What to do
How to improve your share.
Start with a baseline, then work from what it shows. The gaps point to the fix: pages that are not retrievable, answers that are not quotable, or sources that favor rivals.
Take a baseline
Measure your share before any work, so later changes are read against it.Map the gaps
Find questions where you are absent, mentioned but not cited, or beaten by a named rival.Fix access and structure
Check AI crawlers can reach your pages and read the key facts in the raw HTML.Write answer-first pages
Put the direct answer and specific facts first, so an assistant can quote each claim.Track on a schedule
Re-run the same prompts and compare. Act on the sources the answers rely on.
FAQ
Your share of AI answers: common questions.
What is this metric?
AI share of voice compares your brand's presence against competitors across tracked AI responses. Share of voice differs from visibility. Your brand can appear often in AI answers yet hold a low share of voice if competitors appear more often in the same answers.
What is the difference between visibility and share of voice?
Visibility measures how often your brand appears in AI responses. Share of voice measures your brand's share of all tracked brand mentions relative to competitors. A business can have high visibility yet a low share if competitors appear more often in the same answers.
How does this metric differ from a mention or a citation?
A mention is a text reference to your brand in an AI answer. A citation is a link to a page used as a source. Share of voice builds on mentions, so a brand can hold a share without any of its pages being cited.
What do I need to measure it?
You need your website URL, the names of two or three competitors, and an agreed set of buyer prompts. LLMReach's audit covers ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and captures each answer with the prompt and platform so you can reproduce any test.
Does a higher score prove business impact?
A higher score does not by itself prove traffic, pipeline or revenue. It measures presence in AI answers. Connect the findings with your own analytics and commercial data before making claims about business impact.
