# How to Get Your Business on ChatGPT: An Owner's Guide

There is no sign-up for local businesses. A mention comes from the sites ChatGPT reads and a website it can crawl. Here is what to do this week.

By [LLMReach](https://www.llmreach.ai/about) Published November 3, 2026

Short answer

## How do you get your business on ChatGPT?

How to get your business on ChatGPT: let OpenAI's crawler reach your website, make your directory, review and map listings match it, and answer customer questions on your pages. In our test, 70% of local AI answers with sources cited a directory, review site or Google Maps page.

On 13 October 2026, we asked three AI assistants the same question: "best house cleaning service in Denver for a deep clean." ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity each gave a short list of businesses. The lists did not match. If you own a local business, that one test shows how these tools work and where your name needs to show up.

## Three assistants, three different answers.

Look at the three answers below. ChatGPT named four businesses, Gemini four and Perplexity five. Only Alpine Maids appeared in two answers, and no business appeared in all three.

ChatGPT Measured answer - Denver, CO - 13 October 2026

What this means for you

Each assistant pulls from different places, so your business needs to be easy to find on your own site and on the pages these tools lean on.

## Why ChatGPT names some businesses and not yours.

ChatGPT decides by itself when a question needs a web search. It then rewrites your buyer's question into targeted queries and links the sources it used.

A business is more likely to be named when the sources ChatGPT finds describe it clearly and consistently.

* It searches on its own
ChatGPT chooses to search the web based on what the buyer asks.
* It works from queries
Your buyer's question is rewritten into one or more targeted searches.
* It shows its sources
Answers can link to the pages used, and users open them to verify.
* Listings feed it
Directories, review sites and maps are among the sources local answers cite most.

## What we measured in local AI answers

On 13 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity 12 local buyer questions in 9 US cities: 12 questions x 9 cities x 3 assistants = 324 answers, 310 of them with sources.

We then searched the same questions on Google in 8 of the cities: 96 searches, with a map of 3 businesses on 83\. More in our guide to [GEO for local businesses](https://www.llmreach.ai/industries/local-business-geo).

## ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name different businesses.

Being named by one assistant does not carry over to the others. We tested ten local questions across the 10 largest US cities.

The three assistants named 115 businesses together. They agreed on only 1, and 108 were named by one assistant only.

## Check ChatGPT's access in 2 minutes.

ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot. If your site blocks it, your site will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. It can still appear as a plain link. You can check this yourself, and you do not need to be technical.

1. Open a browser and type yourdomain.com/robots.txt, using your real web address. This is a plain text file.
2. Look for OAI-SearchBot. If the line under it says Disallow, it is blocked. A line that says User-agent: \* followed by Disallow: / blocks every crawler, OAI-SearchBot included.
3. If it is blocked, ask whoever runs your website to allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI also recommends allowing requests from its published IP ranges.
4. Wait about 24 hours. OpenAI says it can take that long for its systems to adjust after a robots.txt change.

What an open door looks like: our own robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, the crawler behind ChatGPT search, on every page.

OpenAI's own words: sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

## How to get recommended by AI: five steps.

You can do these without a developer. Start with the access check, because a blocked crawler cancels every other step. Our [AI visibility audit](https://www.llmreach.ai/services/ai-visibility-audit) runs step two for you.

1. ### Let ChatGPT's crawler in
Run the 2-minute check above. OpenAI says to allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and its published IP addresses at your host or CDN.
2. ### Ask the questions yourself
Type your buyers' questions into ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note who is named and which sources are cited.
3. ### Make listings match your site
Use the same name, address, phone and services on your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories cited.
4. ### Add answers to your pages
Put your services, hours, areas served and common questions on plain pages, with the answer first.
5. ### Earn real reviews
Ask customers to review you on the sites assistants cite in your category. Do not buy or fake them.

## What not to do: shortcuts that backfire.

Some shortcuts can hurt you. These rules come from the companies and agencies that set them: [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) and the [FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials).

__Shortcuts to avoid, and what the rule-makers say__
| Don't | Why | Source |
| ----------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------- |
| Stuff extra words into your business name | Google says the name should match your real storefront, website and stationery. Extra information is not permitted and could get the profile suspended. | Google Business Profile guidelines |
| Buy reviews, good or bad | The FTC rule bans businesses from buying positive or negative reviews. The FTC can seek civil penalties. | FTC rule, 14 Aug 2024 |
| Post fake reviews or testimonials | The FTC's final rule of 14 August 2024 bans fake reviews and testimonials. | FTC rule, 14 Aug 2024 |
| Block OAI-SearchBot by mistake | Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot is a separate setting, so you can allow one and not the other. | OpenAI crawler docs |

Google's rule: use the name on your storefront and website. Extra words in the name can get the profile suspended.

The FTC rule bans buying and selling fake reviews, and lets the agency seek civil penalties.

FAQ

## Getting on ChatGPT: common questions.

### Can I submit my business to ChatGPT?

OpenAI documents no submission form for local businesses in ChatGPT. It chooses when to search the web and links the sources it used, so your site and listings are what it can find and quote.

### Does my website need to allow ChatGPT's crawler?

Yes. OpenAI says a site must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it to be eligible for ChatGPT search, and its host or CDN must allow OpenAI's published IP addresses. Robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect.

### Does ranking well on Google get my business on ChatGPT?

Google rankings do not reliably carry over. In our local test, only 18% of the businesses the assistants named were in Google's map, and 53% of mapped businesses were named by no assistant.

### How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my business?

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, and record who is named and which sources are cited. Repeat it on a schedule, because answers change by platform, prompt and week.
